According to a new research, Fox News viewers who were paid to watch CNN for 30 days become more suspicious and less prone to believe false news.
The study by David E Brockman and Joshua L Kalla, titled “The multifarious impacts of partisan media on viewers’ beliefs and attitudes: A field experiment with Fox News viewers,” was done in September 2020 and published last week.
“Of the 763 individuals who met the criteria, 40% were assigned to the therapy group. “We offered treatment group participants $15 per hour to watch 7 hours of CNN per week through September 2020, prioritizing the hours at which individuals reported they generally viewed Fox News,” according to the research.
The survey discovered shifts in popular perceptions of Covid-19, as well as assessments of then-President Donald Trump and Republican candidates, as well as political politicians.
“We discovered numerous consequences of changing the tilt of their media diets on their factual beliefs, attitudes, perceptions of issue significance, and overall political views, despite habitual Fox viewers being mostly strong partisans,” the study’s authors noted.
Participants became more inclined to agree that if Donald Trump made a mistake, Fox News would not cover it, according to the study.
“CNN gave significant coverage of Covid-19, which included information about the severity of the problem as well as criticisms of Trump’s handling of the situation. According to the study, “Fox News covered COVID-19 far less.”
It was discovered that Fox News informed viewers on why the disease is not a major threat, whereas CNN supplied much more information about the disease itself.
“Extensively but selectively about Biden and other Democrats’ supposed opinions on them, as well as outbreaks of violence during racial justice protests in American cities,” Fox News reported on racial issues. CNN gave little information about either, according to the report.
The two networks both discussed voting via mail, but they differed in terms of the information they supplied as well as the frames they offered.
According to the researchers, this is due in part to “partisan coverage filtering,” in which partisan outlets selectively report information, causing viewers to learn a skewed set of facts.
“Treated individuals came to the conclusion that Fox hid bad material about President Trump, which is consistent with this.” “Partisan media not only gives one side an electoral advantage, but it also poses a threat to democratic accountability,” according to the report.
This is just another example of how mainstream media is one of the main causes of division in this country. What these media outlets choose to do with this power is all about greed. The main reason they like to create outrage is because of the advertising dollar.
These news outlets are not looking at the negative results on this country; they’re looking at the bottom line, ratings and advertising. It’s not about politics, it never was/is. It’s about money.
