Russian forces launched a series of attacks on Kyiv

Emergency crews spent much of the morning clearing debris from several apartment buildings struck in the assault. Ukrainian officials say the attack marks one of the heaviest barrages in recent weeks, with air sirens blaring across the capital for more than two hours. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy renewed his appeal for additional air defense systems from Western allies.

The US has imposed new sanctions on Russia

The move targets Gazprom and Rosneft, freezing assets and restricting energy sales through international markets. U.S. officials say the sanctions are meant to curtail Russia’s ability to finance its ongoing military operations. European leaders have voiced cautious support, while Russia responded by threatening to halt energy exports to countries enforcing the measures.

Government shutdown has entered its 21st day

Senators are returning to Capitol Hill today amid pressure to end the standoff. The Department of Energy confirmed that roughly 1,400 National Nuclear Security Administration workers are being furloughed starting this week. Only about 400 staffers will remain to protect critical assets. Officials insist no nuclear safety issues are expected but said delays in maintenance and safety reviews are likely.
