No Spend Friday Protest

On Friday, February 28, 2025, a grassroots movement known as The People’s Union USA is organizing a “No Spend Day,” urging Americans to abstain from all non-essential purchases for 24 hours. This initiative aims to protest the perceived undue influence of large corporations and political entities on the lives of working citizens.
Participants are encouraged to avoid spending both online and in physical stores, particularly steering clear of major retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and Target. The movement also advises against purchasing fast food or gasoline on this day. For essential needs, supporters are urged to patronize local small businesses and, if possible, use cash instead of credit or debit cards.
John Schwarz, a meditation teacher from the Chicago area, founded The People’s Union USA. The organization identifies as nonpartisan and advocates for economic resistance, government accountability, and corporate reform. In addition to the February 28 event, the group has announced plans for another broad-based economic blackout on March 28. They are also organizing targeted boycotts against specific corporations, including Amazon, Nestlé, Walmart, and General Mills. As part of the Amazon boycott, consumers are encouraged to avoid shopping at Whole Foods, which is owned by the e-commerce giant.
The movement has gained traction on social media platforms, with various communities discussing and promoting the upcoming boycott. While the long-term impact of a one-day spending halt remains uncertain, organizers believe that collective action can send a powerful message to corporate and political leaders about the economic influence of everyday consumers.
Experts have noted that while such boycotts may cause a temporary dip in sales for targeted companies, sustained efforts and widespread participation are necessary to effect significant change. Nonetheless, the “No Spend Day” reflects a growing sentiment among consumers seeking to hold corporations accountable and advocate for systemic reforms.
As the date approaches, individuals interested in participating are encouraged to plan their essential purchases accordingly and consider supporting local businesses to minimize the impact on their daily lives while contributing to the movement’s objectives.
